On the way home from Negeri Sembilan, I stopped with my wife and three children at Esplanade Temerloh for a short rest.

It was around midday. Large trees shaded the walkway while Sungai Pahang moved quietly beside us. A few people stood near the river, some taking photos, some simply looking across the water.

To them, it may have been just a peaceful riverside stop.

To me, it was part of an older life.

Before the year 2000, bot penambang (passenger boats) were still busy carrying people across Sungai Pahang, the longest river in Peninsular Malaysia. During my secondary school years in Temerloh, I sometimes took one of those boats to the other side, where a van would continue the journey to school. I was staying in an asrama (boarding hostel) at the time.

Back then, the river was not scenery.

It was part of the route.

The boats carried students, workers and families who depended on them to move from one side to the other. Their engines, passengers and daily crossings gave the river a different kind of life.

Now, the boats seem almost absent.

A few may still be available, but mostly for short leisure rides along Sungai Pahang. What was once a practical form of transport has slowly become something people experience for relaxation.

The river is still there.

Wide, familiar and moving as it always has.

But the way people use it has changed.

Standing there with my family, I realised that places do not always disappear. Sometimes, they remain exactly where they are while their purpose quietly fades.

I once arrived here as a schoolboy, thinking only about reaching the other side.

This time, I returned as a father, stopping to rest before continuing the journey home.

Perhaps that is what makes certain places feel different when we return.

They do not only show us what has changed around them.

They show us what has changed within us.
